World Hunger Concert

Singer/songwriter/actor Tyler Hilton joined Myers Park High School students in the battle against world hunger when he performed in the Myers Park High School Auditorium on December 7th 2004. He is well known for his CD, The Tracks of Tyler Hilton, and his appearances on the hit WB series One Tree Hill. Playing the young Elvis Presley, Mr. Hilton (no relation to other famous Hiltons!) shot the Johnny Cash movie Walk the Line, with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. It's due in theaters in April. He combined his talents with Charlotte-based band Justincase to raise awareness and funding for the fight against hunger and malnutrition.

Billed as Starving for Music, all proceeds from the concert went to Heifer International (http://www.heifer.org), which has led worldwide efforts to eliminate chronic hunger that affects some 800 million people worldwide-- more than the populations of North America and Western Europe combined. Heifer International is dedicated to ending hunger permanently by providing families with livestock and training so that they "can be spared the indignity of depending on others to feed their children." That's because each family receiving a heifer or other animal agrees to "pass on the gift" and donate the female offspring to another family, so that the gift of food is never-ending. This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on in 1945 and has continued for almost 60 years. As a result, millions of families in 115 countries are experiencing better health, more income and the joy of helping others. Celebrities like Susan Sarandon, Jane Pauley and Oprah Winfrey have lent their voices and their time to help Heifer International get out the message of hope.

Starbucks Coffee sold coffee and cookies at the event; proceeds went to Heifer International. Myers Park students also teamed with Starbucks to raise money and provide toys for the Starlight-Starbright Children's Joy Drive. Contributions helped Starlight Starbright empower children and families to cope with the pain, isolation, fear and distress that accompany a serious illness. Toys collected before and at the concert were donated to Charlotte area hospitals.
