Cancer Awareness Week

Myers Park High School hosted a Cancer Awareness Week November 17-21, 2003. In a partnership with Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and the American Cancer Society, students participated in a variety of events all week including:

  • A Virtual Health Fair open all week at www.diversitymatters.org where students found answers to questions that they submitted for prizes.
  • Monday - Nov. 17- A New Orleans Style Funeral for cancer victims during each lunch to remind students that some cancers are preventable if they make the right choices.
  • Tuesday - Nov. 18 - Mix-It-Up Mustangs Salad Day that encouraged students to eat lunch with someone they don't know in our diverse "tossed salad" community and to make that lunch healthy by choosing salads and other healthy items. Students pledged to improve their fitness and nutrition by participating in the Fit City Challenge in which Myers Park teams challenged Chapel Hill and Duke teams.
  • Wednesday - Nov. 19 - Take a Stand for Life - During each lunch, a mime and Myers Park students "Stood Up for Life" to honor those taken by or affected by cancer. Students entertained with acoustic guitars.
  • Thursday - Nov. 20 - Myers Park Kicks Butt Day (Great American Smokeout). Students participated in a "butt kicking" contest with pillows that look like cigarette butts. Students were asked to sign no smoking pledges and received literature about the risks of smoking.
  • Friday - Nov. 21 - Dead on the Quad - Selected students lay down on the quad during each lunch to represent those who have died from preventable cancers such as lung cancer and skin cancer which are influenced by lifestyle choices.
