Myers Park High
School hosted a Cancer Awareness Week November 17-21, 2003. In a partnership
with Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and the American Cancer Society,
students participated in a variety of events all week including:
- A Virtual Health
Fair open
all week at www.diversitymatters.org where students found answers to
questions that they submitted for prizes.
- Monday - Nov. 17-
A New Orleans Style Funeral for cancer victims during each lunch
to remind students that some cancers are preventable if they make the
right choices.
- Tuesday - Nov.
18 - Mix-It-Up Mustangs Salad Day that encouraged students to
eat lunch with someone they don't know in our diverse "tossed salad"
community and to make that lunch healthy by choosing salads and other
healthy items. Students pledged to improve their fitness and nutrition
by participating in the Fit City Challenge in which Myers Park teams
challenged Chapel Hill and Duke teams.
- Wednesday - Nov.
19 - Take a Stand for Life - During each lunch, a mime and Myers
Park students "Stood Up for Life" to honor those taken by
or affected by cancer. Students entertained with acoustic guitars.
- Thursday - Nov.
20 - Myers Park Kicks Butt Day (Great American Smokeout). Students
participated in a "butt kicking" contest with pillows that
look like cigarette butts. Students were asked to sign no smoking pledges
and received literature about the risks of smoking.
- Friday - Nov. 21
- Dead on the Quad - Selected students lay down on the quad during
each lunch to represent those who have died from preventable cancers
such as lung cancer and skin cancer which are influenced by lifestyle
choices.
